Kyoto, a city steeped in history and tradition, is famous for its temples and shrines. As a tourist spot, it attracts a great number of visitors from around the world.

As a city of craftsmanship, Kyoto flourished from the Heian period (A.D. 794-1185). A plethora of items used in the daily lives of the Emperors and nobility were created in the workshops under the control of the Court.Throughout the Kamakura period (A.D. 1185-1333) and the Muromachi period (A.D.1333-1573), artisans specializing in textiles and pottery, gold work, dolls and other crafts were drawn to Kyoto.
Kyoto produced products of a high quality unseen in other regions. These exceptional skills have been passed down throughout the generations to the present in Kyoto.

As Japan entered the Meiji Period which saw it emerge from isolation, many artisans immediately sought to travel to Europe to study the skills and technological accomplishments of Europe. The artisans of Kyoto have not merely focused on preserving traditions, but have actively moved with the times and integrated innovations into their artisanship.

The nature of Kyoto’s people has contributed to the development of another facet of Kyoto, which is the face of Kyoto as a city for high-tech industry and entrepreneurial ventures.Kyocera, Nintendo, Omron, ROHM and other globally renowned high tech corporations started up in Kyoto.Nintendo, famous for its computer games, is based in Kyoto.
